What game did you choose when you first started playing online poker?

I played 1/2 6 max limit with $50. If I have to do it again I'll probably choose a level lower. (0.5/1)

7-Stud believe it or not. That was more than a couple years ago now. For some reason I haven't played it in quite some time. Got sucked into Hold'Em like everybody else and ... well, there's only so many hours in a day.

Do you mean online poker or poker in general? Texas Hold 'em for online and a variety of cheesy games with wild cards in the house games where I started playing.

When I post this question, only Holdem was on my mind. Is there anyone starting off playing a game other than Holdem?

Mind you I'm currently a beginner for online poker.

DOAJOKER
I started playing Low ball in the California clubs when that was the action game. It was the only game with a blind at that time. In Vagas I played Low Ball and Razz.

I started out at Prima's smallest limits which was 0.05/0.10 Fixed limit Holdém. Can't believe it now, must have been so boring.

Super Mario Bros.? :p

This is like my longest post ever, but I'm sure some of you will find it amusing (but it's not funny to me).

My first online experience was intimidating. Two of my friends had beaten me to the trend. I deposited $50 and was talking to my friend on the phone about which game to play. I almost sat down at 1/2 limit, but my friend (an action junky who played almost every hand he was dealt - "I like to see flops," convinced me to play .10/.20 or .25/.50 one or the other I don't remember. I also played many many $5 limit online sit and go's on stars.

It is UNBELIEVABLE how successful I was employing the Phil Hellmuth "Play Poker Like the Pros," cap preflop with any pair above a 6 and AK/AQ style  . This success seemed to work for a while (and very well in the sit and go's), until it started to fail miserably. I was ssssooo convinced I was playing better than everyone when they would showdown like A 10 os, or KQ, that I was stunned when I began to lose big. I moved to 6 max and began raising hands like JQ os and k 10 os UTG, as he recommends in a paragraph on shorthanded play. I was mildly successful but eventually got killed doing this when I'd get cold callers behind my ep raises (I don't know how many times I ended up facing a big bet on the river with a hand like A 6 having completely missed - I called many of these).

At that point I tried to tighten up and decided to play 1/2 6 max - and only play the top ten hands Hellmuth recommended, folding pairs like 10 10 and JJ after capping the flop when I missed a set and the board had an overcard or two. Obviously that didn't go real well. I also played Omaha 8 or better. BTW, the reason the whole idiot Hellmuth thing didn't kill my bankroll was because I was messing around in an Omaha/8 pot limit game and called like a 200 dollar bet with the nut low (and then like 300 more over the top from another player), hit a miracle 4 on the river to give me the wheel and scoop an $800 pot. This gave me plenty of money to give away Hellmuth style until I finally realized I had read the wrong book.

I got the book from a friend for my birthday. Nice present.

Now I'm halfway through SSHE and am looking forward to success.

I probably have found this out a little late. SNG is such a good place to pratice and build up a small bank roll at the same time.

I thought I contributed to this thread already, well here's my start. The first couple of months I played 1/2NL live and I broke about even then I had a monster run online where I won a bunch of money in a short time online and even played as high as 10/20, but never more than a few orbits. I won the bulk of my money playing 5/10. I cashed out and started playing 5/5 live, I ran really bad and I also wasn't ready despite thinking I was. I lost most of the money from my online winnings and then built it back up and kept playing 1/2 live. This is why it's so hard for me to play .10/.25 and .25/.50 online because I've bet more preflop on many occasions than the full buyins for those games. I think I would've had a lot more success by now had I begun playing the small games from the outset, but now I'm trying to stay disciplined and stick to the micro games until I build my money up.

I started with long-handed NL at the lower limits ($.05/$.10).
I've been playing for 9 months now, and I still consider my self to be a begginer, advancing to intermediate player, so I'm still playing at the lower limits, but I've moved to the short-handed tables.
I've given some shots at the $.25/$.50 NL tables from time to time. Soon I will give it another try. I'm looking for to it, mainly because I think that my skills have improved a lot since my last try. I hope I succeed. I'm geting tired of the lower limit tables...
